On Blast! Hey Champ - Cold Dust Girl

So this was one of those sleeper tracks that I slept on when I first heard it. It was a reject from last month’s mixtape. But three weeks later I’m unwittingly jamming to it constantly. Anyone know what I’m talking about? Or is just the alcohol speaking right now? Such is life! Enjoy your weekend!

On Blast! Oberhofer - Gold

Just discovered Brad Oberhofer via Hypem and I’m digging his sound. Very catchy! I’m kinda wishing I lived in NYC as I’d be at his Brooklyn show tonight (@ Death By Audio).

On Blast! Patrick Wolf - Hard Times (Jack Beats)

So I’ve been listening to this track for a while now and I’m not sure why I haven’t posted an On Blast! for it yet. It’s standing up to the test of time so I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m considering it come the end of the year for best remix. This is definitely one of the cases where the remix surpasses the original; so kudos to Jack Beats!

On Blast! The Drums - Down By The Water

EP Out on August 4th 2009

So if you’re into good music, which you are if you’re reading this, then you’re going to enjoy The Drums. This brooklyn band is poised to make a name for themselves this year and I believe they’ll do just that. They’ve been able to successfully meld genre influences from several decades together to create wonderfully fresh pop music.

The Drum’s EP drops next month on August 4th (Sept. 15) on Twenty Seven Records. I’m already predicting they’ll be on many a Best of 2009 list come the end of the year.  Their track ‘Down By The Water’ is available at their Myspace Page.  (Sorry, I looked high and low for an mp3 but couldn’t find one).   I’ve posted another terrific track here instead.

On Blast! Discovery - Orange Shirt

Holy New R&B POP Rock Batman! Introducing Discovery. I’ve heard a couple of songs of their up-coming album… and wow! Upbeat and unapologetic rhythmic pop in all its glory. Discovery is a collaborative project from Ra Ra Riot’s Wes Miles and Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij. Their debut LP simply titled LP comes out July 7th on XL Recordings. I believe ‘Orange Shirt’ is officially the first single and its definitely On Blast!

On Blast! Asher Roth - I Love College (Kid Static Remix)

Asher Roth

So Mr. Roth has is share of haters (e.g. Pitchfork) AND his share of dick riders (e.g. NME) so I’ll leave him alone and play it neutral. I mean, I’ve yet to even audition his album. I will however state for the sake of full disclosure and for whatever else its worth, that I have no intention of auditioning his album.

Hype and sike aside, I can’t deny that this dubstep mix of ‘I Love College’ is sick.  Swine Flu Sick!

On Blast! Passion Pit - The Reeling

Passion Pit

If you weren’t aware, I spent most of my early twenties listening to a lot of pop punk.  I’m not ashamed to say it either; Ok maybe just a little ashamed…  There was just something about upbeat rock songs and  super catchy hooks, that I couldn’t resist.  Fast forward to 2008 when Marvinh forwarded me a song he found cruising the web, it was Sleepy Head by Passion Pit.  I was instantaniously hooked, mega-catch and very danceable; I desperately needed more.  I quickly found their ep. which stayed on blast for the remainder of the year. It sorta took me back the days when I attended festivals like Bamboozle Skate and Surf Fest in Asbury Park, where i’d sing along at the top of my lungs as bands like The Starting Line and New Found Glory graced the stage.   Anyhow,  Passion Pit recently released the first single off of their debut full length entitled The Reeling, and it seems I’m hooked again.  The album comes out next month and I can’t wait!  Album of the summer?  Possibly!

On Blast! Japandroids - Young Hearts Spark Fire

Japandroids

Don’t know if I’m growing tired of all the perfectly timed, processed and over produced synth-tro that I’ve been immersed in over the past few months, but I’m definitely feeling Japandroids latest single ‘Young Hearts Spark Fire’. It’s the opposite of everything I mentioned above, still upbeat, loud and fun.

Their new album Post-Nothing is out next month and I’ll surely be one of the first grab it upon its release. Here’s a description grabbed from their myspace page.

“Originally intended to be a trio, the boys decided to forgo the logistical nightmare of having a ‘lead singer’ and do it themselves. As a consequence, Japandroids are 1 guitar, 1 set of drums, and 2 vocalizers. They call it garage rock. They don’t care what you call it, as long as it’s not minimal”

Unfortunately it looks like they’re skipping over Philly on their spring tour so maybe I’ll have to trek up to NYC to see them in May.
